Travel Route

Decide on which countries you would like to visit but keep the route flexible in terms of the cities or areas to visit. This will allow you to change route at short notice if you meet new people or find information on more interesting places to visit while travelling.

Many round the world flight tickets allow for the possibility for changing either the route or the flight dates. For example, the Star Alliance round the world fare allows free changes to flight dates in most cases. Changing the route is possible but this will involve additional charges and destinations are only possible if covered by one of the airlines in the Star Alliance group.

Star Alliance offer 4 different fare levels with mileage ranging from 26,000 to 39,000 miles. The choice of flights can range from 3 to 15 and each destination can only be visited once as the route does not allow flying back to a previously visited destination.

Many round the world flight schemes will vary in what they have to offer but each will come with its' own restrictions in terms of destinations covered and charges for changing routes or flight dates. Many schemes also insist that the flights start and end at the same destination.

An alternative to the round the world flight ticket is to buy a long haul return flight and travel overland between countries via buses, coaches and trains. This is a great way to see a variety of countries on one continent such as Asia, Africa or South America. This also provides a great deal of flexibility in terms of changing plans without any financial penalty and travelling overland can be a relatively cheap way of travelling large distances on continents such as Asia.
